In the wake of U.S. Army soldier Bowe Bergdahl’s release from Taliban captivity just over two weeks ago, two competing production teams are vying to bring the controversial story to the big screen. Zero Dark Thirty/Hurt Locker duo Kathryn Bigelow and Mark Boal are developing one of the projects, which will be written by Boal and produced by his new Megan Ellison–backed Page One production company (Bigelow apparently has no plans to direct at this point). The other film comes from Fox Searchlight, which acquired the rights to a Rolling Stone article about Bergdahl titled “Last Prisoner of War” written by the late journalist Michael Hastings. Little Children’s Todd Field will write and produce, and The Wrap reports that he intends to direct as well. No word on whether either project has taken CNN’s suggestion and asked Damian Lewis to play Bergdahl, but we’re anticipating a heated bidding war.
