Many people have noticed that some aspects of Interstellar, to put it lightly, do not make too much sense. Fortunately, the Daily Beast sat down with Christopher Nolan to get to the bottom of all of the film’s puzzling contrivances. Or, in Nolan’s view, the lack of puzzling contrivances.â€My films are always held to a weirdly high standard for those issues that isn’t applied to everybody else’s films — which I’m fine with,†the director said. “People are always accusing my films of having plot holes, and I’m very aware of the plot holes in my films and very aware of when people spot them, but they generally don’t.â€Â
Nolan then challenged the Daily Beast to name a plot hole in the film; puzzlingly, it chose to spotlight one of the few things in the movie that did make sense: the way time slowed down on a planet close to a black hole. And thus, the filmmaker was able to slip away: “That’s completely accurate, so there’s no hole there at all.†Okay, but what about the watch thing and the “Stay†thing and the Matt Damon thing and the black-hole thing and the Tesseract thing and the Old Murph thing? You’re not getting away that easily, Nolan.
