After the recent news of Sony and Marvel’s squalid 2011 contract dictating that on-screen Spider-Men must always be straight, white, abstinent men who don’t smoke or use naughty words, there’s finally some good news for comic fans: Miles Morales, a biracial Spider-Man (the first black and second Latino man, after Miguel O’Hara from Spider-Man 2099 in the ’90s), is entering the main comic canon.
Morales first appeared in 2011 and, while extremely popular with fans, has thus far been restricted to the Ultimate line. But with the Ultimate series folding, Morales will join genuine Peter Parker in the main line of titles this fall, according to New York Daily News.
“Our message has to be it’s not Spider-Man with an asterisk, it’s the real Spider-Man for kids of color, for adults of color and everybody else,†Eisner Award–winning series co-creator Brian Michael Bendis explained.
Morales will join the first female Thor, the first black Captain America, and the first Muslim Marvel heroine, Ms. Marvel, in the All New, All Different Avengers lineup, the most ethnically diverse lineup in Marvel Comics history.
