Kathryn Bigelow and Mark Boal, who directed and wrote The Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty, have announced that their next project will be a crime-drama set during the Detroit race riots in 1967. This may come as a surprise to listeners of the second season of Serial, as much of that podcast features reporting from Boal on Bergdahl’s disappearance from his army base in Afghanistan and subsequent captivity under the Taliban, done in preparation for a later film with Bigelow. According to a release from Annapurna, Boal has been researching the Detroit project for more than a year. The film will be produced by Annapurna Pictures and is set to begin shooting this summer in time for a 2017 release, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the riots. Bergdahl is currently facing desertion charges in a military court. Boal told Deadline that he and Bigelow “will circle back to Bergdahl when the military proceedings are resolved.”
