In a recent Elle Canada interview, Iggy Azalea reconfirmed her relationship status with Azealia Banks. The move was bound to stir something up: “If I could, I would Men in Black memory-erase 2015 … I think the Azealia Banks thing is what really started it all,†Iggy said, referencing a rough year in her history of hip-hop controversy. “We don’t like each other on a personal level, and that has gone on for many years — before the Black Lives Matter incident happened … I still hate Azealia Banks.†Sure enough, the public mentioning of Banks’s name got her going.
What followed late Tuesday night was “Used to Being Alone,†Banks’s latest single and musical mic drop.
As has been pointed out, the song sounds semi-familiar because it features the Tony Igy sample used in Iggy Azalea’s “My World.†It might not be the Meek-Drake-style dis track for which you were hoping — “Alone†plays more as a heartbroken dance jam, one that’s notably used as an opportunity for Banks to flex her vocals — but the hijacked background still takes the rappers’ beef to new territory. “Alone†comes on the heels of “The Big Big Beat,†and, as Banks mentioned, is likely an indication that her Slay-Z mixtape is coming very, very soon:
