2016 BAFTA TV Nominations: It’s Idris Elba vs. Mark Rylance Again

Earlier this year, Idris Elba and Mark Rylance faced off at the movie night of the BAFTAs with Rylance’s eventual Oscar-winning performance in Bridge of Spies beating out Elba’s in Beasts of No Nation. They’re up against each other again for the TV portion in the Leading Actor category with Rylance nominated for Wolf Hall and Elba getting his first TV BAFTA nod for Luther. (They also faced off for both of those roles at the Golden Globes, where both lost.) It’s like the Martina Navratilova vs. Chris Evert! The Red Sox vs. the Yankees! Coke vs. Pepsi!

Overall Rylance has the edge, with Wolf Hall leading the nominations with four and Peter Kay’s Car Share and This Is England ‘90 right behind with three each. Elsewhere, Sir Ian McKellen gets his first BAFTA TV nomination for The Dresser, and that darling show The Great British Bake Off snags its fifth consecutive nomination in the features category. Bake!
