Because someone told Michael Mann you thought the book is always better than the movie, the lauded director is launching his own book imprint (“Who’s laughing now?†Mann said, in the middle of a Hollywood office littered with awards). A priority of the imprint, which is called Michael Mann Books, is to develop a prequel novel to Heat, that 1995 Robert De Niro–Al Pacino crime thriller you may have heard about. Mann will also help produce a slew of novels and “look through his own long list of credits for ideas,†though he will probably not consider films like The Last of the Mohicans, Manhunter, or Public Enemies, because those were books already.
