As the world seems to be increasingly hell-bent on pulling itself completely asunder, it can be helpful to look back at history and realize, hey, we’ve always been hanging on by our fingernails. Oh wait, not helpful. What’s the word? Oh right, terrifying. It can be terrifying. Based on the 1997 Philip Roth novel of the same name, American Pastoral tracks a family’s disintegration following an act of domestic terrorism committed by their teen daughter during the upheaval of the ’60s. The trailer is mainly shots of Ewan McGregor, Jennifer Connelly, and Dakota Fanning staring into the middle distance with blank horror, presumably at the decomposition of the American dream.
