During his opening monologue on Late Show last night, Stephen Colbert addressed the news that Oxford Dictionaries has made “post-truth†its 2016 word of the year – “post-truth†being nothing more than a blatant copy of his old Colbert Report term and 2006 word of the year “truthiness.†“Now, check out the definition of post-truth: ‘Relating to or denoting circumstances in which objective facts are less influential in shaping public opinion than appeals to emotion and personal belief,’†Colbert says. “Oh, I personally believe I’m getting ripped off.†Maybe if truthiness hadn’t taken over our lives since Colbert coined it in 2005, Oxford would have known that there was already a succinct word out there that got the job done.
