Two great warring nations are apparently at peace, for now. Patti LuPone and Andrew Lloyd Webber, who have been at odds since 1994, reportedly made up during rehearsals for LuPone’s performance of “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina†at the Grammys. “Hello, Andrew,†LuPone said as Webber arrived in the room, “This is détente, ladies and gentlemen.†The infamous feud began during the original production of Webber’s musical adaptation of Sunset Boulevard. LuPone originated the role of Norma Desmond in London with the promise of taking it to Broadway, but Webber decided to replace her with Glenn Close, who’d been doing it in L.A. Afterward, LuPone sued Webber, and as she discussed in her memoir, used the settlement to pay for what she called the “Andrew Lloyd Webber Memorial Pool†at her home in Connecticut. As with any détente you might learn about in AP European History, we imagine this truce may be shaky to start off. This saga will only well and truly end if she decides to give her pool a different name.
