Back in simpler, snake emoji-less times before the media turned against Taylor Swift, our blonde songstress was very publicly thriving with her carousel of famous friends: Karlie Kloss here, Selena Gomez there, some unnamed Victoria’s Secret models out in the back. You couldn’t open a magazine or scroll through Instagram without being bombarded with Swift’s “girl squad,†and what do you know, overexposure syndrome eventually kicked in with all of those Fourth of July parties as a result. After a long hiatus, Swift is slowly realigning herself with some new squad members, but seemingly regrets how everything went down with her OG squad. As she wrote in a new essay for Elle, “drama†plagued the group and caused its ultimate demise. She also admitted she brought the girls together because of childhood insecurities:
Even as an adult, I still have recurring flashbacks of sitting at lunch tables alone or hiding in a bathroom stall, or trying to make a new friend and being laughed at. In my twenties I found myself surrounded by girls who wanted to be my friend. So I shouted it from the rooftops, posted pictures, and celebrated my newfound acceptance into a sisterhood, without realizing that other people might still feel the way I did when I felt so alone. It’s important to address our long-standing issues before we turn into the living embodiment of them.
Swift also said she’s blocked the phone numbers of certain friends who’ve caused her “unsolvable†pain — ooooh — and has some Tumblr words of wisdom for anyone contemplating a friend breakup. “It’s sad but sometimes when you grow, you outgrow relationships,†she advises. “You may leave behind friendships along the way, but you’ll always keep the memories.†Not if you get flashed by one of those Men in Black neuralyzers, but whatever.
