Black-ish creator Kenya Barris and Rashida Jones are teaming up to star in a Netflix comedy series together. The streaming network announced today that it’s ordered a single-cam series from Barris titled Black Excellence, which he will also star in alongside Jones. Inspired by Barris’s “irreverent, highly flawed, unbelievably honest approach to parenting, relationships, race, and culture,†the series “looks to pull the curtain back and reboot the ‘family sitcom’ in a way we’ve never seen before.†Until now, Barris has remained mostly behind the camera and only has two acting credits — one being his brief appearance as “Grown Man Baby Coach†on Black-ish:

Black Excellence marks the first project in Barris’s multimillion-dollar deal with Netflix that was announced last year. In addition to creating and starring, he will also serve as an executive producer on the show alongside Jones and Black-ish’s Hale Rothstein. Black Excellence isn’t the only spin on the traditional sitcom that Rashida Jones is currently working on — she’s also developing a comedy at AMC with Will McCormack that’s a take on the cliché sitcom wife à la Kevin Can Wait with the perfect working title: Kevin Can F*** Himself.
