The Magic Mike musical, which promised a splashy run in Boston before heading toward Broadway, won’t be going to The Hub after all. The musical has canceled its engagement at Boston’s Emerson Colonial Theatre, which was supposed to start this November. The musical’s producers, which include Channing Tatum and Steven Soderbergh, said in a press release that they “don’t feel the musical is ready for production.†The theater is refunding ticket sales. Magic Mike: The Musical’s writer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, composer Tom Kitt, and lyricist Brian Yorkey recently left the production over “creative differences†just before a developmental workshop that was supposed to take place earlier this month.
Director Trip Cullman and choreographer Camille A. Brown are reportedly still with the show, which was originally described as a prequel to the 2012 movie that would explain how Channing Tatum’s film character, Mike Lane, became a stripper. According to the Boston Globe, the production will have an announcement in the coming weeks about “what the next step will be,†whether the producers will reschedule a run in Boston with a new creative team, or push the show forward in some other way. Personally, we blame the poop that haunted the Magic Mike rehearsal rooms for all this.
