the honor is all ours

Four-time nominee David Lynch will never get another chance to take home that Best Director Oscar for 1980’s The Elephant Man (Or 1986’s Blue Velvet, or 2001’s Mulholland Drive …), but few would claim his cumulative body of work isn’t worthy of a major award. Even the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences itself thinks so, as it announced its plan Monday to give the Twin Peaks creator an honorary Oscar at the 2019 Governors Awards in October. Cherokee-American actor Wes Studi, who appeared in a number of nominated films including 1990’s Dances With Wolves and 1992’s The Last of the Mohicans, and Italian filmmaker Lina Wertmüller, the first woman to receive a Best Director nom for 1977’s Seven Beauties, will also take home their very own statuettes.

Meanwhile Geena Davis, an Oscar winner for her turn in 1988’s The Accidental Tourist, will be presented with the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award for her work on gender equality in the industry, including her creation of the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media in 2004. Davis’s honorary Oscar for The Long Kiss Goodnight, we have to presume, is still forthcoming.
