Moviepass hasn’t been having the best uh, year. After re-tooling its subscription plan and maybe possibly losing a lot of subscribers, effective at 5 a.m. ET on July 4th the service shut down for maintenance it says could take “several weeks.†The company claims it will come back with an improved version, but didn’t offer any details. “There’s never a good time to have to do this,†CEO Mitch Lowe said in a statement. “But to complete the improved version of our app, one that we believe will provide a much better experience for our subscribers, it has to be done.†According to Variety, subscribers won’t be charged during the downtime and they will be credited for the lost days whenever the service comes back up.
