Matthew Broderick, presumably taking a break from rehearsals of his upcoming Broadway play, stopped in on this week’s SNL as Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to help clean up the Trump impeachment mess. The cold open followed Mike Pence (Beck Bennett) as he tried to do damage control with the help of a mealy-mouthed Rudy Giuliani (Kate McKinnon) and a fantastically wigged Bill Barr (Aidy Bryant). McKinnon’s Giuliani is always a twitchy delight, and Bennett is downright frightening as he sips a pewter glass of milk, but the true highlight of the sketch was Broderick’s low-key Pompeo, who notes at one point, “I think that this whole impeachment thing could be really bad.†He’s not wrong!
