Turns Out Jamie Loftus’s Hometown Was Not Raising Money for ‘Education’

Thanks to the coronavirus, comedians are now trapped at home like the rest of us, so we decided that while we’re all self-quarantining, we’d do something a little different from our usual “Follow Friday� column. Instead of interviewing up-and-coming comedians we love on Twitter, we’re going live on Instagram every week to check in on some of our favorite people in comedy and get a firsthand look into how they’re handling the pandemic. So welcome to our new version of the column, now titled “Follow (From a Safe Distance) Friday.�

This week, Jamie Loftus put aside her feelings about getting stood up by her therapist to sit down for a chat about what she’s getting into while she’s stuck in her house. She expressed her admiration for all the work mutual-aid organizers are putting in right now, explained why she ate a cake pop for breakfast, and gave us the details of her new quarantine habit: quilting. She and I also got a chance to squash our Massachusetts hometown rivalry, and she gave us the anecdote of the year about the town she grew up in: “One of my favorite Brockton things ever was when they did a fundraiser for ‘education’ for years. And then it turns out what the fundraiser was actually for was a 40-feet-tall statue of Rocky Marciano.�
