Leave the World Behind Makes It Okay to Be Scared of Teslas

If the world was falling apart and Mahershala Ali and Myha’la showed up at our door, don’t think we’d complain. But that’s not movie logic, so we get the reaction that Julia Roberts and Ethan Hawke have in the new trailer for Leave the World Behind, which basically amounts to: “What are you doing in my (rented) swamp?†The upcoming Netflix film follows a family, led by Roberts and Hawke, whose world is upended when a man and his daughter (Ali and Myha’la) show up and tell them that the world is ending, which is followed by news of a cyberattack that does, in fact, end the world as they know it. Despite it being the end of the world, it does not appear that either faction is particularly thrilled by the other’s presence. “We need to get them out of here,†Myha’la’s character says in the trailer. Meanwhile, the cyberattack is causing Teslas to go rogue. Directed by Sam Esmail (Mr. Robot) and based on the 2020 book of the same name by Rumaan Alam, the film will open in theaters on November 22 and come out on Netflix on December 8. Other Julia Roberts movies may be more comforting for Christmastime, but we’d argue that the one where unwelcome guests show up at her home and there’s a ton of drama seems pretty apt for most holiday experiences.
