Thanks to the coronavirus, comedians are now trapped at home like the rest of us, so we decided that while we’re all self-quarantining, we’d do something a little different from our usual “Follow Friday†column. Instead of interviewing up-and-coming comedians we love on Twitter, we’re going live on Instagram every week to check in on some of our favorite people in comedy to get a firsthand look into how they’re handling the pandemic. So welcome to our new version of the column, now titled “Follow (From a Safe Distance) Friday.â€
This week, Yedoye Travis (Netflix, Comedy Central, probably every cartoon looking for a Black guy voice sometime soon) took a break from his busy pandemic schedule to chat with me about how he’s keeping things together during the pandemic. He got pensive about the future of Black people in the entertainment industry, broke down how he’s feeling bad about people feeling good in this moment, and blatantly refused to answer my innocent questions about his Gundam models. He also told us about his shock when his mom suddenly started to support his career in comedy: “First of all: What country are you from? Cause it’s not Nigeria … That’s not the immigrant mom that I know.â€
