Did you know?

During the 19th century, many Germans moved to large towns and cities to find work. As living conditions were often very poor, the authorities provided allotment gardens for families to grow their own vegetables and fruit. These gardens were initially called Armengärten (gardens of the poor), but during the world wars of the 20th century, they helped people become self-sufficient and provide for their families.

Today, an allotment garden is called ein Schrebergarten. They are very popular with apartment-dwellers of all ages who don't have a garden of their own.

However, a Schrebergarten is more than just a place to grow plants and fresh produce. People often build pretty sheds and outhouses in them, and use them as a place to relax outdoors and barbeque with friends and family.
