While promoting Age of Adz in the U.S., Sufjan Stevens was cagey about the debilitating illness he suffered while writing the album, but now that he’s embarking on a U.K. tour, he’s opened up a little. (Crossing the Atlantic makes everyone more candid, apparently.) According to the Soof, his illness — which doctors were never able to properly diagnose — involved a feeling of lethargy coupled with intense adrenaline surges in his chest, mimicking the sensation of being poisoned. “This was really supernatural,” he told the Guardian. “It was like I was possessed.” In fact, it left Stevens so sensitive to crowds, noise, and stimuli that he swore off movies for three months, then had a breakdown while watching Fantastic Mr. Fox that was only averted by a quickly gulped Xanax. Fortunately, Stevens is now on the mend — and he’s even dared to watch the Wes Anderson stop-motion film again, calling it “beautiful” and this time acknowledging “no negative response.” [Guardian UK]
