For at least five years, we’ve been tracking the start-and-stop saga that is the long-awaited Beetlejuice sequel. Russell Brand’s name was at one point tossed around, then it was said to be a priority at one production company, with Burton later reported to return as director only to hint, in 2014, that the sequel was “closer than ever.†Both Winona Ryder and Michael Keaton have said they’re game to reprise their roles, so it would seem Beetlejuice 2 is a done deal, right? That’s what one report on Friday claimed to confirm, saying that Warner Bros. had greenlit the sequel with Burton, Keaton, and Ryder returning. Turns out, it was just another bit of wishful thinking. Burton’s rep confirms to EW that the report was based on “fabricated comments†from Burton, and that Beetlejuice 2 is still not in development while Burton instead focuses on his live-action Dumbo movie and, next, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. Until anyone says otherwise, we’ll all be hanging out in one big dark room of disappointment.
