Antoine Fuqua is either three different people masquerading in the same skin suit, or he’s got a terrible memory, because there’s no way he would agree to direct five movies and develop four TV projects in the same year, is there? Perhaps if that fifth potential film project is Universal’s vaunted Scarface property, you push yourself to the brink of insanity to make it happen. Deadline is reporting that Fuqua (Training Day, The Equalizer) is the latest filmmaker to “circle†the Scarface reboot, which was first announced back in 2011. In 2013, David Yates was in “final talks†with the studio to helm the film, and then in 2014 it was Chilean director Pablo Larraín. Now, two years later, Fuqua is the next man in the queue. If ever this piece of vaporware does come to life, it will take the “rags to riches†immigrant narrative of the 1932 and 1983 films and move the story to present-day Los Angeles. The script has gone through various iterations, but one early draft was penned by Suicide Squad’s David Ayer, who would also make a great choice for this when Universal starts looking for a different director again.
