‘Little Clown’ Does Something More Sketches Should

Written by and starring Wes Haney, directed by Doron Max Hagay, and featuring Ana Fabrega in a silent but memorable role, Little Clown grabbed my intention because of the risks it takes.

What begins as a straight ahead sketch setup–guy buys weird clown art–pivots to offer a twist about halfway through. It heightens like a sketch, but does so with a narrative arc not usually seen in this sort of short-form contribution. Part of its payoff is also a change in tonal speeds from goofy to downright eerie, and that got me thinking about how I’d love to see short-form digital comedy take more storytelling chances. At this stage in the internet video game, I think creators have earned the right.
