Many of us have never lived in a TV and film era that wasn’t The Golden Age of Stephen King. But between The Dark Tower, Gerald’s Game, 1922, Castle Rock, Mr. Mercedes, The Mist TV spinoff, and, of course, the upcoming It remake, viewers who are lukewarm on King are better off spending their 2017 reading a good book. Only then they’d look down and realize far too late that the book is also by Stephen King. Spooky. Sleeping Beauties, the exceedingly prolific horror author’s latest work co-written with his son Owen King, doesn’t hit bookstore shelves until September, but it’s already been optioned by Anonymous Content for a potential television series. According to Deadline, the book recounts the strange goings-on in a small Appalachian town in which all sleeping women “become shrouded in a cocoon-like gauze. If they are awakened, if the gauze wrapping their bodies is disturbed or violated, the women become feral and spectacularly violent. And while they sleep they go to another place. Meanwhile, the men are abandoned, left to their increasingly primal devices.†Evie, the town’s one female resident who does not undergo sleep cocooning, becomes the subject of her neighbors’ suspicion, a premise which, admittedly, already has your spine tingling.
