During the promotion of her (critically acclaimed) album Crash, Charli XCX wore a T-shirt that read “They don’t build statues of critics.” Well! Brat is now the most critically acclaimed album of 2024 (as Charli would very much have you know), and she herself is a critic on Letterboxd. Oh, how the tides turn. Charli’s Letterboxd leaked to the public on December 27, causing her to change her bio on the app to “my account got leaked i guess.” The account is @itscharlibb, the top four include Charlie’s Angels (duh), and all the ratings are currently five stars. When the account initially leaked, lower-rated movies included the Kevin Spacey–starring 21 (one and a half stars), the Elle Fanning–starring Teen Spirit (one and a half), Matthew McConaughey’s Beach Bum (two and a half), and Sam Levinson’s Assassination Nation (three). Her four-star movies included Milk, Cruel Intentions, and, most scandalously, Shiva Baby, starring her friend Rachel Sennott. Gasp! Those ratings have since been removed.
The actual reviews are mostly short ’n’ sweet notes, like her assertion that the baseball movie Moneyball “isn’t for British people.” One review that could be interpreted as qualitative is her response to the Timothée Chalamet–starring A Complete Unknown: “there were a lot of songs in this!” Charli has gone on record as saying that she, despite being a musician, hates musicals. “We did karaoke last night, and someone performed ‘All That Jazz’ and I wanted to strangle them,” she told Coup de Main in 2018. “I hate that shit so much.” Sorry, Timmy! You know how critics can be.
