Imagine you’re getting psyched up to have dinner with Anna Wintour. To discuss CDFA/Vogue business, which is very cool and important and one of the few things you’re willing to leave the house for, because you’re kind of under-the-weather and need to rest up before a big trip. So you go to glam and you get all shiny and cute. And then when you get to the restaurant, it’s just your bf proposing? What a let down! Kidding, kidding, Shaun White’s proposal to Nina Dobrev actually sounds very sweet.
Dobrev and White announced their betrothal to Vogue, which is only fair since White used the mag as a reason to trick Dobrev out of the house. According to White, Dobrev is a planner. She’s rarely surprised, but she does loves to be surprised, so he went all out on the subterfuge to make his proposal a shock to her system. Dobrev had suspected White would pop the question when they were South Africa for The Earthshot Prize Ceremony. So he decided to actually do it a few weeks before in New York. Good plan, right? Wrong! Dobrev told him she didn’t want to go out at all until Africa. So White made up an offer she couldn’t refuse. He had his publicist send a fake invite to a fake CDFA/Vogue dinner with Anna Wintour. “He made the invite look so legitimate,â€Â Dobrev says. White hired glam, pretended it was from Vogue, and laid in wait for her to arrive at The Golden Swan.
When Dobrev got there and saw White under an arch of white roses, she says she “went into shock. I just froze and stared at him,†she says. “She’s like, ‘So, wait, Anna’s not here?’†White says. Dobrev doesn’t remember the rest of her proposal, saying she kind of blacked out. But she said yes, and all the couple’s friends and family came out to party! Not Anna Wintour, though. She’d better get an invite to the wedding.
