The summer box office is getting off to a healthy start with newcomer The Great Gatsby beginning its theatrical run with a $51 million opening weekend. That’s a good haul, but Baz Luhrman’s somewhat controversial cinematic adaptation couldn’t compete with Iron Man 3, which made Disney another $72.5 million in its second weekend, sex tape non-scandal and all. Pain and Gain, which was in second place last weekend, dropped to third with $5 million. This weekend’s other debut, the Tyler Perry-affiliated The Peeples, came in fourth with $4.8 million in tickets sales, while Jackie Robinson biopic 42 rounded out the box office’s top five with a $4.7 million take.
