Don’t count on getting David Lynch: the Return anytime soon. Lynch has emphysema from years of smoking, he told Sight & Sound, per Consequence. “I’m homebound whether I like it or not,†the director says in the September issue. “I can’t go out. And I can only walk a short distance before I’m out of oxygen.†If he were to direct another project, it would have to be from home, using remote technology, but he’s never wanted to work from home. “I like to be amongst the things and get ideas there,†Lynch says. “But I would try to do it remotely, if it comes to it.†Lynch has since quit smoking, after years of the stuff. “Smoking was something that I absolutely loved, but in the end, it bit me,†he reports. “It was part of the art life for me: the tobacco and the smell of it, and lighting things and smoking and going back and sitting back and having a smoke and looking at your work, or thinking about things; nothing like it in this world is so beautiful.†Sorry, were we supposed to deterred from smoking cigarettes? That really made smoking seem cool. But, no, don’t. It’s bad. Anti-smoking.
