Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana were spotted meandering around Rome this weekend in priestly vestments. These are not the leopard-print enthusiasts’ ironic running-to-the-corner-store outfits. The design duo is playing priests in the upcoming musical motion picture Nine, based on the Broadway musical inspired by Frederico Fellini’s 8 1/2. Lest you doubt the seriousness of their new side project, their Nine co-stars include Daniel Day-Lewis, Marion Cotillard, Judi Dench, Nicole Kidman, Penélope Cruz, and Sophia Loren. Now that is star-spangled if we’ve ever seen an American flag.
We’re glad to see designers infiltrating sister industries. We hope the trend continues, because all those celebrities who design fashion lines oughtn’t expect to plow ahead in 2009 without getting their toes stepped on. Also, isn’t it interesting that Stefano and Domenico are starring alongside the likes of Daniel Day-Lewis and Sophia Loren fresh out the gate, while most celebrity lines are lucky if they can survive at stores like Sears? We hope Stefano and Domenico have a song and dance together in this movie.
