Despite all the financial messiness Crocs endured last year, the company will still open a Soho outpost on the corner of Spring and Wooster. The bloggers at Racked, who do a great job of keeping an eye on new store construction, haven’t noticed any new renovations to the building since the summer of ‘08. Racked posits the construction delay may have been due to the building’s age (it’s a Federal-style house dating to 1818), but we also wonder whether the company nearly going under last year had anything to do with it. But they’ve got a hefty loan tucked into their hole-punched plastic and now all kinds of activity is happening! A façade has been rebricked, new wooden clapboards have gone up on two others, and a “glassy modern addition” is being constructed adjacent to the building. So the store will be even worse than expected. Even if you don’t go inside, not only will you feel in your bones the ugliness that lurks there every time you’re in the neighborhood, but you’ll also be able to see it since at least part of the store could be entirely see-through. BOO.
