James Conran said his fashion education began out of necessity soon after he met his model wife of five months, Coco Rocha. “I had to have a crash course in fashion. About two years ago I didn’t know anything, but then I was like, I better get to know what this girl’s doing for work,” Conran said at last night’s WWD @ 100 Anniversary Gala. By this point, Rocha thinks her husband knows more about fashion than she does, but she still has more clothes, and she hogs all the closet space in the house. “She has her closet and my closet,” Conran said; in fact, the flannel shirt Rocha wore to the party is her husband’s. “I couldn’t even find my own clothes; I was like, give me your clothes,” she said.
Meanwhile, the couple is hoping for more closet space soon: “We want a house with a garden,” Conran said. “We’re talking about Brooklyn Heights or something.” If they lived there, he went on dreamily, they’d only come into Manhattan for work. “You’d never see us again,” Rocha added. There’s one problem, though: “No one wants to buy our apartment,” she sighed. (The apartment was recently featured in Vogue.)
Meanwhile, Karen Elson said that Christina Hendricks did, in fact, sway her to become a redhead, as reported. “I read that [Harper’s Bazaar story] and you know, she did tell me years ago,” Elson said. “We did a shoot together and I remember her beautiful red hair, and I had the worst sort of strawberry blonde mousy hair, and she was like, ‘Here, you should dye your hair red, it’s going to work for you,’” Elson explained on her way to the stage to sing “Happy Birthday” to WWD. “But then when I came to New York and I was about to work with Meisel and do the cover of Italian Vogue, he was going to choose red or black; and I willed the red. Thanks to Christina Hendricks, I willed it. So yeah, she encouraged the red hair.”
