The biggest trend to trickle down from the spring runways has been crop tops paired with high-waisted pants or skirts, revealing just a sliver of skin. We’ve seen midriff-baring looks on the red carpet, on magazine covers, and once even in our own office; Shala Monroque counts herself as a long-time fan. At Australian Fashion Week, the warm weather was the perfect excuse for street-style stars like Margaret Zhang, above, to break out their navel-skimming best. Don’t get too trendy here, though — the easiest way to to try this look is with a plain gray cropped turtleneck or a classic stripe print. Pair the top with dark trousers to slim your hips, polish it off with a sleek pumps and, if it’s chilly, take a cue from Zhang and add a roomy coat to play with proportion. You’ll look very of-the-moment without trying too hard.
