Every holiday season, velvet tries to make an aggressive comeback. But much like fruitcake, it’s nice to look at but never really seems to catch on. That is, until the recent shows in London, when designers experimented with velvet in cool ways. At Christopher Kane, it came in the form of a dress in a rich shade of red with royal-blue accents, an evening alternative to silks and satin. Simone Rocha, meanwhile, showed a kooky two-piece creation you could easily picture Susie Lau wearing over a white turtleneck. And Japanese brand Toga took it searingly bright, showing a hot-pink velvet overcoat that’s sure to make for eye-catching street-style bait next season.
