Target Steps Into Gender-Neutral Future

Are you tired of seeing a pink aisle and a blue aisle whenever you shop for kids’ stuff? Head to Target. On Friday, the megachain announced that it would begin to remove the gendered indicators that point shoppers toward toys and children’s bedding. A press release on the company’s site states, “We never want guests or their families to feel frustrated or limited by the way things are presented.”

The release goes on to explain that this is merely a first step, saying “teams are working across the store to identify areas where we can phase out gender-based signage to help strike a better balance,” although the company seems to be drawing the line at mixing men’s and women’s clothing for now. This is a good move and the change will start to take effect in the next few months. The big question: Will other chain stores follow suit?
