On Monday night, as the better part of America watched Michelle Obama say what we’ve all been thinking without her ever having to say it, Donald J. Trump was in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, doing what he does best: making stuff up.

During an almost-hour-long speech that touched on everything from “crooked Hillary Clinton” to “crazy Bernie,” Trump addressed why he believes he’s not polling so well with women. In last month’s NBC/WSJ poll, Trump was bested by Clinton among women voters by 52 percent to 35 percent. Here is what Trump had to say about that: “Fifty percent of our country is men, where I’m doing very, very well,” he said. “That’s the good news. Let me give you the bad news: The women. I don’t know what’s going on with the women here. But I think, I think I’m doing well with the women.”

In the very same speech, Trump addressed the issue of Elizabeth Warren’s cheekbones — “You find anything nice about her cheekbones? I don’t know” — so at least we know he’s taking women’s issues seriously.
