The time has come. Lady Gaga has shed her A Star Is Born persona and brought us the campy, dramatic, over-the-top, “Poker Face”/“Bad Romance”–era Gaga we all know and love. She arrived at the 2019 Met Gala and changed three times on the red carpet. Of course, what would we expect our favorite theater-kid fashion plate to do at the “Camp: Notes on Fashion”–themed soiree? She’s also a co-chair, so it made sense that she got time to shine. Let’s break down her performance, shall we?
Gaga arrived followed by many men carrying her train. She was also followed by a pink wagon carrying several of the clear Brandon Maxwell bags that each come with their own Champagne bottle. Here is some hilarious footage of her walking down the street.
Look One was a giant magenta gown, again by Brandon Maxwell. The men carrying her train made it billow and swell on the pink carpet before she changed into a black dress with a black bustle and opened an umbrella. Let’s call this the chrysalis moment of her metamorphosis.
Look Two harkened to the era of camp associated with Marie Antoinette and Louis XIV. She spun with the umbrella and posed (or, shall we say, camped) on the Met steps. But just as the butterfly does not stay cocooned for long, so did Gaga explode into a third outfit. Pink again.
Wearing a more modern style and looking like a Barbie doll, Gaga turned the stairs into her personal stage (don’t worry, she was the only person on the carpet at the time … we think).
And here we have Gaga in her natural habitat: wearing very little, her hair in a bob with bows, accompanied by absurd accessories. Welcome home, Gaga. Enjoy your night.
