Marianne Williamson would like you to know that, whatever Vogue says (or, maybe more accurately, doesn’t say), she is a serious presidential contender. Earlier this week, the magazine published a story entitled, “Madam President? Five Candidates on What It Will Take to Shatter the Most Stubborn Glass Ceiling,” and while Williamson — a spiritual leader and a Democratic candidate — merited passing mention, she did not make it into the Annie Leibovitz portraits that ran with the piece.
Looking at those photos, you might have assumed that just five women — Elizabeth Warren, Kamala Harris, Tulsi Gabbard, Amy Klobuchar, and Kirsten Gillibrand — had thrown their hats into the 2020 ring, but no no, there are six women running for president, and Williamson did not appreciate the oversight. After taking Vogue to task for abdicating its “ethical responsibilities” in ignoring a candidate who meets all the technical requirements for the nation’s highest office, she decided to do something about the snub. Williamson isn’t just another all talk, no action politician, you see. She knows how to use Photoshop.
In a truly stunning power move, Williamson edited her own head into one of the shots and posted it to Instagram, a magnificent July Fourth salute. Where a painting of a ship once loomed over the gathering of her opponents, carousing and smiling as if sharing an inside joke, Williamson pasted a presidential portrait of her own head. Yes, in this vision of the future, Williamson sits in the oval office, beaming down upon her vanquished adversaries, who have very clearly learned how to harness the power of love in bridging their political differences. Scroll through to the final slide and see for yourself: It’s sort of like the Unwanted Ivanka memes, but with a far more delightful kind of chaos.
“It’s amazing when you dust off certain phases and reclaim them for their modern relevance,” Williamson wrote in the caption. It’s also amazing what you can do when you dust off the old image editing software and let the spirit move you. “Each of us is pregnant with a better version of ourselves,” as the candidate herself once said, and with this Instagram, Williamson has given birth to the most magnificent version of herself we’ve seen yet.
