Give it a few weeks, but soon enough, everyone’s inboxes will be pinging merrily away to the sound of holiday party invites. Some of that is fun: glasses of bubbly flowing, sugary treats to your heart’s content, and getting to hang out with family and friends. But some other parts — the getting dressed part, specifically — not so much. How to strike the ever-so-delicate balance between sophistication, cheerfulness, and also being seasonally appropriate? Our advice: you can’t go wrong with glitzy jewelry that’ll light up a room.
David Yurman knows a thing or two about how to shine bright that way. Take the brand’s latest collection, DY Origami, featuring sculptural pieces (inspired by Japanese art) that combine the elegance of 18K gold with a touch of diamonds. With the collection, you can layer on a ton of necklaces, or let one bold ring do the talking. We asked five stylish women about how they would incorporate statement jewelry pieces with festive seasonal looks, all available at Saks Fifth Avenue.
Moani Lee
Celebrity makeup artist
As a makeup artist, I generally find myself going straight from work to an event or holiday party, so I often have a very short period of time to transition from workwear to evening wear. Also, my general take on holiday parties is that I’d love to wear the look all year round for any special occasion or any reason to celebrate. So for the most part, I tend to stick to classic/staple color palettes when it comes to my clothing pieces (such as navy blue or black). And then I love to add beautiful jewelry elements and accessory pieces that can quickly transition me from day to night.

The drama of these earrings! Perfect for transitioning from the Great Jones office to a festive party. Speaking of, it doesn’t get more dramatic than this puff-sleeved dress from Rosie Assoulin, which is fun and vibrant, but not too serious. I like to wear animal print in playful ways, and the holidays are one of the few times it’s socially acceptable to really take an outfit overboard with a bold bag, too.

Wrap dresses bring me a unique joy, considering they are basically a mix of bathrobe and ballgown. I’m always looking for the most not-obvious way to be at peak comfort while maintaining a “lewk,” especially when it comes to nights out. This Saloni piece is in my ideal shade of forest green, and kindly screams “flowy in all the right places.” I’m very into its playful textures, which is where the gold necklace and chunky heels come in. My philosophy with jewelry is simple: I want it to make a statement. I love the layers of this piece — how it seems to go on for days. It’s so ornate and detailed, and it’s definitely a conversation piece for all those potentially awkward office party encounters.

Founder of 3rd Ritual
If you’re familiar with 3rd Ritual, you’ve probably guessed that I have a strong bias for colors and textures that are inspired by nature. I love this minimal, etherial dress from The Row because, like most of their pieces, it’s pretty unassuming at first glance but the quality comes through in the craftsmanship. But, if you’re going to go simple, it’s all about the jewelry. That’s why I chose this David Yurman ring, featuring a precious, moss-green prasiolite stone. It’s like adorning your hand with a tiny sculptural work of art!

“More is more is more” is basically how I approach holiday dressing. It’s my time to be obnoxious and get away with it, so I like to wear all of the things I usually wouldn’t go for during a formal event, like this sparkly Erdem dress. The length hits at about the ankle, so you can showcase a great shoe — I’m a big fan of really strappy lace-up heels. Sometimes a necklace can compete too much with the dress, as in this case, so I show my love of jewelry with cool cuffs, and layering them to eternity with stacks of them. You could wear 10 of these at once and it wouldn’t look overzealous. That’s how understatedly cool these are.
