As New York Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2020 drew to a close, showgoers flaunted some of their last looks in the city before jetting off to Paris, London, and Milan. Photographer Liisa Jokinen (the founder of Gem and the lens behind Hel Looks and NYC Looks) caught plenty of stylish people outside of the Michael Kors show and Spring Studios. Scroll down to see 16 of them — including stylists, writers, influencers, and designers — explain how they decided what to wear.
Lauren Caruso, site director at the Zoe Report and freelance creative consultant, 31
“I’m wearing a vintage menswear blazer, a maxi dress from Sir the Label that I pinned to a midi length, a pair of wide-leg pants from Mijeong Park, Wandler boots, and a Michael Kors bag. The lipstick is MAC’s Ruby Woo. I gravitate toward easy neutrals in interesting silhouettes, like boxy blazers or structured coats. Almost everything in my closet can be paired, which makes getting dressed in the morning easy. I love finding new brands and paying close attention to the way they shoot their clothing. Even if the brand doesn’t fit my style profile, I often come away with a new way to wear something or feel inspired to look at my own closet differently.”

“I’m wearing a Dorothee Schumacher blue coat and orange puffer, a Louis Vuitton denim button-down and jeans, a Prada bag, Fendi boots, and a Louis Vuitton scarf. I’m all about dressing for myself — what makes me feel and look good. At the end of the day, your style should lift you up. Listen to your instincts and don’t second guess yourself.”

Shannon Adducci, style director at Footwear News, 35
“I’m wearing a Dries Van Noten coat that I bought on The RealReal, vintage leather pants from the ’80s found on Etsy, a puff-sleeved sweater from & Other Stories, a vintage Paloma Picasso belt also from The RealReal, a vintage Chanel bag, Schutz boots, J.Crew earrings, Rag & Bone sunglasses, and a vintage costume chain necklace that can also be worn as a belt. In the past two years I made a concerted effort to buy more responsibly. Nearly all of my clothing is now vintage or from a secondhand retailer — and I find that I enjoy the hunt for great pieces more when I look in those places. My family deals in estate jewelry, art, and antiques so I’ve always known the value in giving old things new life, but it’s exciting to see more people are turning to that lifestyle. Footwear, which is what I work in, is inherently more difficult to navigate secondhand — no one wants to wear other people’s shoes, and footwear wears down faster than, say, a coat or dress. I think it’s really incumbent on the footwear industry right now to find more ways to recycle footwear components and materials.”

Elijah Crawford, creative director and model, 25
“Many of the pieces were selected from thrift stores throughout Philadelphia. The color palette of the turquoise turtleneck, grandma sweater, and suede khakis are all brought together with the yellow ‘Careless Bastard’ furby chain and woven ‘Pieces of’ bracelet. My philosophy is to find a style that matches your personality and take it to the max.”
