Humans have been carrying actual buckets for … a long time … but the bucket bag comes and goes with fashion trends. The minimalist Mansur Gavriel bucket bag stands out in recent memory as an It accessory, but I was personally never that into its shape. It seemed bulky to me, and perhaps easy to steal my keys and wallet from if I wasn’t careful about closing it.
Hedi Slimane is a master of reworking designs from the past, and the bucket bag is no exception. The above style may look pretty standard from the angle in the photo, but it’s actually tapered slightly at the top, making it more the shape of a cone than a bucket. It seems easier to tuck under one’s arm, or hang against one’s hip. And harder to steal from. In typical Slimane fashion, it’s also just way more sleek.
