The American government’s rigorous system of checks and balances is hanging by a thread, as evidenced by the fact that one of the strongest checks our Constitution saw to put in place — former Victoria’s Secret models — has somehow failed to prevent the current administration’s repeated efforts to undermine the results of the 2020 presidential election. Yes, I’m sorry to say that Karlie Kloss’s half-hearted attempts to keep the Trump family in line have failed.

As a violent mob of Trump supporters descended upon the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday, delaying the certification of Joe Biden as president-elect, Kloss — who is married to Josh Kushner, the brother of Ivanka Trump’s husband and White House adviser Jared Kushner — voiced her disapproval on Twitter.

“Accepting the results of a legitimate democratic election is patriotic,” Kloss wrote. “Refusing to do so and inciting violence is anti-American.”

When a follower told her to “tell your brother- and sister-in-law,” Kloss replied, “I’ve tried.

The extent of Kloss’s private efforts to reason with her in-laws is unknown, but publicly her criticism of them has been muted. In a 2019 interview with British Vogue, she said that it’s been “hard” to be related to Ivanka and Jared but that “I choose to focus on the values that I share with my husband, and those are the same liberal values that I was raised with and that have guided me throughout my life.” And in the lead-up to the 2020 presidential election, she also showed her support for Trump’s opponents by wearing a Biden-Harris mask in her voting selfie. She has not, however, been particularly vocal in opposing the Trump administration’s policies, except for the occasional veiled call to action on social media.

Perhaps she can keep trying from the comfort of the $23.5 million estate she and Josh recently purchased in Miami, just minutes away from Jared and Ivanka’s home.

Democracy in action.
