Marjorie Taylor Greene, the conspiracist Republican representative who has been condemned for her role in stoking the Capitol riot and stripped from her committee assignments, has progressed from shitposting online to literal shitposting in the halls of Congress. Yesterday, Greene decided to send a despicable message to her colleague Marie Newman of Illinois, whose office is across from hers, by hanging up a bigoted poster in the hallway: “There are TWO genders: Male & Female. Trust The Science!,” it read. “Thought we’d put up our [poster] so she can look at it every time she opens her door,” Greene wrote on Twitter. Newman’s daughter is trans.
Greene has already racked up an impressive list of stupid, hateful stunts in her short time in office. Cori Bush, the representative from Missouri, moved her office away from Greene’s in January because she refused to put on a mask, days after multiple members tested positive for the coronavirus after being corralled with maskless Republican representatives on January 6. Bush said that Greene “berated” her during the confrontation, while a staff member yelled “Stop inciting violence with Black Lives Matter.”
The latest incident occurred after a heated debate in the house over the Equality Act, legislation that would extend civil-rights protections to LGBTQ Americans. Greene has come out vehemently against passing the Act; Newman decided to call her out by hanging a transgender flag outside of her office. “Our neighbor tried to block the Equality Act because she believes prohibiting discrimination against trans Americans is ‘disgusting, immoral, and evil,’” Newman wrote in her own Twitter post. “Thought we’d put up our Transgender flag so she can look at it every time she opens her door.”
That’s when Greene responded by hanging the large poster across from Newman’s flag. She went even further in another message on Twitter refusing to recognize Newman’s daughter’s gender identity. “As mothers, we all love and support our children,” she said, “But your biological son does NOT belong in my daughters’ bathrooms, locker rooms, and sports teams.”
Newman responded today to Greene’s disgusting messages. “The symbolism was simply to put the flag out there so she has to see our community every day,” Newman said. As for the poster, “My first thought was, ‘Wow, she has a lot of time on her hands, because she had to go print that out.’”
