Britney Spears once again shut down the MTV Video Music Awards — this time, from home, and not actually on the VMAs. She’s engaged! The singer posted a video to her Instagram posing with an enormous diamond ring while her now-fiancé Sam Asghari — considerate king that he is — asks if she likes it. (The answer, Spears indicates, is yes.)
She seems to have coordinated her new red-hair dye job (very “Come On Over” Christina Aguilera, but that’s another conversation) to her manicure — a sign that maybe she had some inkling her hands were about to be featured prominently online. Who can blame her?!
So actually, a lot of people knew the engagement announcement was coming: On Friday, Asghari posted an Instagram Story with a giant diamond engagement ring, which had the word “Lioness” inscribed on the inside of the band. Asghari immediately deleted it and told everyone he got hacked. A likely story!
In June, Spears said in a virtual court appearance that she did not believe she was able to get married under her conservatorship, which she’s been fighting for years to be removed. “I was told right now, in the conservatorship, I’m not able to get married or have a baby,” she said, pointing out that the people controlling her life wouldn’t let her remove her IUD. While it’s not clear whether her father’s about-face on ending her conservatorship had any effect on the engagement, the announcement is exciting nonetheless. Congratulations to Spears and her new fiancé!
