When fashion trends cycle in and out every few weeks, mindful shopping can be a challenge. And for stylish, sustainable shoppers, each piece might feel like a big commitment. One such mindful style expert is Dawn Tan, a Denver-based content creator whose specialties include sustainable fashion. “The concept of minimalism is what I use as a compass to guide me with my personal style, buying decisions, and the person I strive to become,” she says. Throughout her social media and in countless profile pieces, you’ll spot soothing neutral tones and vintage favorites, plus touches of Tan’s signature dry humor.
The core principle of her style is that pieces should be loved, well-crafted, and able to pack a punch. “I am more inclined to purchase something new if it’s a quality item that I know I will have for years to come,” Tan explains. Some of her favorite pieces right now? Strappy sandals by Jil Sander (a brand focused on sharp tailoring), a vintage Versace suit, and an oversized houndstooth wool coat: all closet staples that transcend any fleeting trend.
We asked Tan what she’s eyeing this spring from Nordstrom’s luxe lineup of new-season designer staples. For her, it’s all about power pieces to wear and style in multiple ways. “When I wear a neutral palette, I feel empowered, beautiful, and my most confident self,” she says. Ahead, 12 forever-investment pieces that Tan loves — from Khaite to The Row and Miu Miu.
“I think I might actually bite the bullet. Silhouettes are very important to me, and I love that brands like Khaite [do them] so beautifully.”
“Designer monograms are back on trend this season, and I normally stay away from them — especially the ones that are too flashy, but these Gucci slingbacks are still a neutral and understated way to add a pop of logo into any minimalistic outfits.”
“While I prefer to source vintage shops for trousers, I’m more inclined to purchase new pieces when I know its quality and fit are great. It’s something that you will always reach for in your closet — whether you’re going for coffee with a friend, heading to the office, or going on a business lunch.”
“I have about five pairs of Mary Jane pumps in my cart at the moment. I think everyone needs a pair of Mary Janes this spring. I would pair it with a structured tweed jacket and vintage Levi’s for a daytime look.”
“This Oseree cover-up dress makes me want to book a luxurious trip to the Italian coast. I love an understated luxury, and this dress encapsulates that. It’s sexy, chic, and timeless.”
“I love how tweed can seamlessly elevate a simple white t-shirt and jeans outfit. You can take it from day to night by switching out your accessories, shoes, and bags. Very versatile, and another investment piece that will last forever.”
“Miniskirts will be huge this spring, and I especially love this one by Area. The scalloped hemline with the crystal fringe is so unique and fresh. I feel like there are so many ways to style it – with its matching crystal fringe bolero and heels for a night out, or a slightly oversized silk button-down, a long coat, and a pair of chunky loafers would be great for daytime, too.”
“Another theme I’ve been seeing a lot from the spring runway is an oversized bag. I still love the micro-trend we had last year but personally love oversized bags! I carry a lot of things with me, so something like this Khaite structured tote bag will be great for the warmer months and can be worn from day to night.”
“My goal this year is to start adding a pop of color into my wardrobe, and I think the best way for me to do it (without getting bored of it so quickly) is through bags, shoes, and accessories. I love this yellow pair by Manolo.”
“This bag is the perfect minimalistic, understated bag that [also] fits a lot. Its shape is timeless, and this dusty green color will go well with literally anything.”
“I love the gathered waistline on this one and how the fabric drapes so effortlessly. Again, another versatile and timeless piece. I can wear it to the beach, to lunch, and to an evening event – endless possibilities!”
“Cutouts are being seen everywhere right now, but especially on coats and blazers. I’m a big fan! I love this one by Alexander McQueen, the most due to its open back.”
