Cannes Film Festival, Frieze Art Fair, and the Doja Cat Patron party — oh my! Cannes and art crawls will always be elegant affairs, but they make for memorable parties and debauchery, which means this week’s Party Pics is a good one.
On May 18, in Chicago and Venice, Theaster Gates and Prada Group hosted their third Dorchester Industries Experimental Design Lab (EDL) retreat presentation to honor 14 Black designers. For those of you who don’t know, the design lab is a three-year program made to support and amplify the work of designers of color working across multiple creative mediums, and this year, the selected group went out with a bang and pulled a look at the presentation.
Best Multidisciplinary Artists: Kyle Abraham, Brandon Breaux, Summer Coleman, Salome Asega, Maya Bird-Murphy
It makes sense as to why this group is being honored and awarded for their art endeavors, their outfits are masterpieces themselves.
Best Choker: Elle Fanning
We predicted that flower chokers would return in our spring and summer trend forecast. And return they did. Elle Fanning took the trend to another level with this crystal-encrusted Cartier flower choker. And isn’t her hair reminiscent of updos seen in The Great?
Ice Queen: Doja Cat
First it was a bleached ’do, and now Doja’s bleached brows truly complete her look. At the Patrón El Cielo party, Doja Cat performs in an all-white Priscavera fit, complete with an blinged-out icy Patron bottle in hand.
Best Little Black Dress: Storm Reid
Everyone needs a little black dress, and Storm Reid proves that these safety dresses we hold in our closet for a last-minute occasion do the trick at the Vanity Fair x Prada Party at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival at Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc.
Bling Bling Bling: Alessandra Ambrosio
And sometimes, at the same party, you need to make a statement, so crystals it is.
Best Dude Look: Eric Andre
Yeah, you see what you get with this outfit. It’s a very “run to the bodega” or “filing taxes” ensemble, but it’s Eric Andre, so there’s something great about it.
Best Cutouts: Alex Consani
Women’s pants never had pockets anyways, cut them out!
Best Silhouette: Maria Alia Al-sadek
At the launch of the pre-fall 2023 Collection at Hotel Chelsea, Maria Alia Al-Sadek wears a subversive and abstract dress-suit that glimmers in the best way possible. Balmain is always known for its sparkle, but what a way to step out.
Best Blues: Yara Shahidi
All blue is the new all black. And at the Dia Beacon Spring Benefit, Shahidi joined over 450 artists and philanthropists to celebrate and preview the opening of four exhibitions at the Dia Beacon. Through the support of Bottega Venetta and chairmen like Matthieu Blazy, the gala’s proceeds were able to fund Dia’s innovative programs, including its long-term installations, commissions of ambitious new projects, publications, public lectures and readings, and educational initiatives.
Western Barbie Chic: Ava Jean
So you’re telling me “Western Barbie” didn’t make the cut in the Greta Gerwig adaptation?
No Paparazzi Please: Suki Waterhouse
Suki Waterhouse wears many hats, but who knew she was taking up a side-hustle in event photography? At the Golden GooseHAUS launch, Waterhouse captures the cool Golden Goose essence in a laid-back all-black suit.
Motomami: Solange Smith
Formula One may be over, but the drag-race-inspired fits will go on forever. At the Elle Faunt opening dinner and party, Solange Smith wears a head-turning Ikea racer jacket.
Rare Outing: Sofia Coppola
It’s not much, but it’s rare to see her out. At the 100th Anniversary of The House of Suntory, Sofia Coppola blesses us with her presence in a classic black dress. Come out more, Sofia!
Best Everything: Gabriella Karefa-Johnson
One word for this look presented at the Parsons 2023 benefit: Yes.
