While many things have changed from the original Sex and the City days — Carrie’s natural curls are out, blowouts are in; Big was out, then in, then out, then in, and finally very, extremely out — one element of And Just Like That … remains the same: These women will turn a look if it’s the last thing they do. Luckily for you, you no longer need to hate or gawk at or gush over the costuming all by your lonesome. We’ll do it together right here. Every. Single. Week.
How mortifying is it, at this point, not to have at least held the JW Anderson pigeon purse?
In October of last year, Sarah Jessica Parker teased the bag on her Instagram alongside a fresh-off-the-runway Fendi ankle baguette, and photos from set emerged of her in costume holding the pigeon in question — a model so lifelike a few people thought it was real. It sent the internet into a frenzy, and in the second episode of And Just Like That …’s sophomore season, we were treated to this famous avian.
It makes sense: Pigeons are New York. Everywhere you go, they and their cooing are sure to follow (especially if you have any bread-based food item on your person).
Although I couldn’t help but wonder (sorry) … why has Carrie chosen this moment to hold a bird purse when she had refused to carry the bedazzled Judith Leiber bird purse Big gave her decades ago? (Which I thought was a fun accessory, for the record!!!) Is this a signal that Big somehow influenced Carrie’s taste? A posthumous tip of the hat to her departed husband? Or was it the rhinestones in the original that set her off?
I Couldn’t Help But Stare …
If you’re following along at home, that’s two for two on our AJLT bird-watch. I was tickled pink (and blue and gray and brown and whatever other colors pigeons normally are) at how Carrie handled this bag: resting it atop her head as Charlotte nearly went full Karen on a consignment-shop sales clerk and opening its tiny plastic wings to grab a piece of gum. There they were, the pigeon and Carrie, two New Yorkers just trying to get through the day. A moment of silence, though, for the Fendi ankle baguette that never had its moment to shine onscreen.
