What is it?
Coach’s newly launched Shine collection includes a variety of (yes, shiny) pieces ranging from a $95 card case to a $2,200 shearling coat. One standout, the Penn shoulder bag, looks like the elevated version of the Y2K handbag I would have begged my mom for when I was younger. With its structured silhouette pulled right from the brand’s archives, it’s the kind of bag you’d want to use to stow your lip gloss and Razr between classes. And I mean that in the best of ways. The flashy accessories are also more than ideal for getting captured by a street-style photographer since metallics are trending. Thank you, Renaissance tour!
The arrival of this line coincides with creative director Stuart Vevers’s tenth year at the brand. To celebrate the decade, Coach hosted a star-studded party at the New York Public Library after presenting the spring 2024 collection, which included some runway crashers too.
Do I need this?
Yes. Don’t be discouraged by its size. It’s more practical than you might think. Here’s exactly what I could fit inside it: my wallet (a card case coincidentally also from Coach), Dior lip oil, Isamaya Beauty lip liner, a compact mirror, a small comb, and my keys. There were a few days when I had to make the most of my pocket space, but overall it came in clutch throughout New York Fashion Week.
Taking a note from the Cut’s fashion director, Jess Willis, I decided not to designate this bag for special occasions but to treat it as an everyday bag. It came with me to shows during the day and to their respective after-parties. Since it’s an ultrashiny, almost mirrorlike silver, it was “neutral” enough to match everything: I paired it with oversize denim, ruffled all-black dresses, and looks that channeled the aughts, including tank tops and skirts. Without fail, it was a match that garnered plenty of compliments.
