Fall is boot season. But before you buy another pair, we want you to consider the shape of the season: the platform boot. Why? It adds height while still being comfortable enough to trek around the city. This week, the Cut’s fashion director, Jessica Willis, breaks down how to style them.
.
The Hero Piece: The Platform Boot
“The platform boot is for the person that wants the drama of wearing a tall boot without the pain of wearing a high heel,” Willis says. Sky-high platforms have been consistent on the runways at Marc Jacobs, Versace, and Coperni. When it comes to the style, the higher, the better, Willis notes. Our hero piece comes from Dries Van Noten and does not skimp on inches.

Next, add a bottom that shows them off
Try a dress with a high slit. Alternatively, you could pair the boots with an A-line skirt or a pair of long shorts that graze the top of the boots.
.
Don’t be afraid to clash patterns
The fun of fall is choosing a rich color palette of warm yellows and browns to make this work for this look. Willis embraces clashing prints and patterns: “What makes this work is that it clashes in a good way,” she says about the Knwls dress and Dries Van Noten boots. “There are coordinating colors in the dress and jacket that work together.”
.
Keep your jewelry flashy too
Go big or go home. Don’t slow down now; grab some oversize jewelry to accessorize with. Willis wore Cartier earrings and a large Panthère de Cartier ring, which also features coordinating tones like gold to match the rest of the look.
.
Add a dainty little bag
Willis added this clutch from Gabriela Hearst, which can hold a surprising amount and comes equipped with an easy-to-use handle. The unexpected blue color also coordinates with the blue tones in the dress and jacket.

Here are five sky-high platforms to add to your closet.
With just as much height, this shiny black pair from Altuzarra is perfect for wearing with longer dresses and skirts.
This high-drama and even higher platform boot goes over the knee, so feel free to pair it with your tiniest miniskirts. It’s also made of the brand’s trademark vegetarian leather alternative.
Opt for a slightly more rugged and chunkier silhouette with just as much comfort and height.
Add some interest with Peter Do’s structural platform and slightly square toe.
