If any of the accessories in our closets came to life, they might not have much to say. Our shoes would be too exhausted to speak and our seasonal accouterments — scarves, gloves, and the occasional beanie — would probably never wake up, considering they only see the light of day for a few weeks a year. But bags? They could ghost write our autobiographies.
Their personalities are most aligned with ours. Sometimes they match what we’re wearing so effortlessly, they don’t feel like an accessory to our outfits at all, rather, they make them. The bags we can’t leave home without are such powerful extensions of ourselves that, if given the chance, they could walk, talk, and hail a cab better than all of us.
As 2024 approaches, the desire for a new cherished accessory builds. And when you have good taste (like you’re willing to spend triple digits on a bag), the decision-making process shouldn’t be taken lightly. But we’ll stop talking now and pass the mic to the Miu Miu bags we expect to flood the streets of New York. It’s usually in poor taste to read someone’s diary but we’re making an exception just this once.
The Gen Z Ingénue
An “It” girl who’s too young to really know what an “It” girl is. She has the kind of charm that could rival a celebrity on a movie press tour, but she’s a homebody at heart.

I miss summer. Last night, I dreamt it was July: I was face up in McCarren Park, with a $17 paloma in my hand and an inexplicably long straw connecting its contents to my mouth. Life was so good then. I guess I should count my blessings — at least it finally stopped raining.
My friends say I’m a fashion enigma, but I think I’m in denial. I knew it was 40 degrees today, but did that stop me from wearing bright begonia pink with the confidence of a girlboss in 2016? No. Summer doesn’t last forever, but what’s wrong with infusing a little delusion into my closet? So I took my off-season color to the streets to run errands. After restocking my “girl dinner” supplies, I stopped by Brooklyn Charm to make a custom necklace for … myself. Now that I read it back, that sounds kind of selfish, especially with only a few weeks left until Christmas. But as you can see, I was going through it today. Treat culture is my religion.
I desperately want to go to bed and binge Christmas movies, but I have a crucial argument ahead of me tonight: My roommate wants to go to SantaCon. I’ll spend the next few hours talking her out of it.
The Hobby Enthusiast
She could charge friends admission for entering her apartment — there’s just that much stuff to look at. She doesn’t have a full-time job, but she does have at least two degrees.

Today marks the second to last semester of my MFA program. Don’t tell anyone, but I’m looking forward to the free time next year. Those new ballet — and watercolor and piano — lessons are going to take up most of my time.
I finally sorted through my Hinge matches — it helped kill the two-hour commute to Governor’s Island to save oysters. Did you know there are 220,000 acres of oyster reefs in New York? I’m trying to save them all. I actually suggested it for a first date next week. If someone can’t love me in my waders, then I don’t want their love at all.
I normally prefer homemade gifts, but, apparently, not everyone likes receiving an annotated book from my personal library for Christmas. Hopefully, my sister will be excited for the Degas print I found at the museum gift shop. Maybe I should’ve gotten Renoir. Or Manet? Oh well, I’ll just go back tomorrow and buy a few backups, which means I can take the leftovers. Now I need to strategize on exactly how I’ll carry my ballet slippers, paint brushes, and music notes across town. Even with extra storage space, I’m small — but bound for greatness, as they say.
The Social Butterfly
The black cat to Wander’s golden retriever. Their entire day calls for multiple forms of transportation and a perfectly curated playlist that can endure a roundtrip commute from Astoria to Fort Greene.

If my penship looks a little shaky, it’s because I just had another espresso shot. It’s only 5 p.m. I say “only” because I still have a dinner party to attend tonight — and that’s before I have to grab the last ferry over to Staten Island. My dad insists I help cut down a Christmas tree this year. I still haven’t told him I can’t stay the entire weekend because I have a Hanukkah party in Queens on Sunday. He’ll understand … I think.
Have I ever been so busy? Don’t answer that. And don’t look at my cab receipts. Needless to say, I’m skipping the car and taking a bike instead. Even in the winter, it’s one of my favorite ways to get around town — I fit perfectly in the basket. Let’s just hope my gift for the hostess doesn’t roll out of me and onto Kent Street. I’ll barely have time to come home and change between obligations, but I’m prepared for anything — whether it be a cold Christmas tree farm or dinner in a “classic six.”
The Sparkly Sybarite
Monday through Thursday, she’s holding court at the bar in the Bowery Hotel. On the weekends, she’s flanked by friends in a red booth at The Nines. She knows this city — and its bouncers — like the back of her hand.

I’m sitting on my bed taking a much-deserved break. I’ve been elbow deep in my closet for the last hour trying to put together an outfit that can withstand an entire day out of the apartment. Technically, I don’t have plans, but I almost never need them — I have 300 unread texts waiting for my response and friends all over this city guaranteeing me company … if I want it. Because I relish my alone time — ever since I was 17 21 years old, I’ve loved posting up in Bemelmans Bar, sipping a cold martini while I read memoirs and essays from native New Yorkers who loved doing the exact same thing in their heyday.
While I’m really comfortable with solitude, I can’t help that my look attracts attention. People say my sparkling personality is a put-on, but it’s not. I’ve looked like this my whole life. If everyone were a little more honest, they’d agree: A bejeweled life is a good one.
Inspiration just hit so I need to strike while the iron is hot. Talk soon. Xoxo.
